A NATO Stock Number, more simply known as an NSN, is a 13 digit numeric code assigned to standardized material items of supply in an effort to establish a common identification system for all NATO countries. The NSN digits are split into two groups, including the first 4 digit FSCG and the following 9 digit NIIN. The FSCG, or Federal Supply Classification Group, is used to group parts together that may serve a similar purpose and is split into a Federal Supply Group (FSG) and Federal Supply Class (FSC). Meanwhile, the NIIN number, or National Item Identification Number (NIIN), serves to record which country first codified the item with the first two digits and then follows them with a unique string of numbers to set that particular item apart from the rest.
